Disney’s Animal Kingdom Guide for UK Families 2026 & 2027

Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers a very different experience from the other Walt Disney World parks. It combines exciting rides, live animals, walking trails, stage shows and some of Disney’s most detailed themed environments.

The park is home to Avatar Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest and Pandora – The World of Avatar. Newer additions include Zootopia: Better Zoogether! and Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station.

Although Animal Kingdom has fewer traditional rides than Magic Kingdom, it should not automatically be treated as a half-day park. Families who explore the animal trails, watch the main shows and visit Conservation Station can easily spend a full day here.

This guide explains what is currently open, which attractions to prioritise and how UK families can organise a realistic Animal Kingdom itinerary.

Is Disney’s Animal Kingdom Worth Visiting?

Animal Kingdom is worth visiting for most families, especially those interested in animals, Avatar, live entertainment or moderate thrill rides.

The park feels less frantic than Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios because many of its best experiences are not rides. You can explore wildlife trails, watch animal-care specialists, enjoy live music and take time to appreciate the park’s scenery.

Animal Kingdom is particularly suitable for:

  • Families with animal-loving children
  • Avatar fans
  • First-time Walt Disney World visitors
  • Guests who enjoy live shows
  • Adults and teenagers looking for thrill rides
  • Families wanting a slightly more relaxed Disney day

It may be less suitable for visitors who only want traditional Disney rides or a large nighttime fireworks show.

For a first visit, we recommend allowing one full day rather than trying to fit Animal Kingdom into a few spare hours.

Important Animal Kingdom Updates for 2026

Animal Kingdom is currently undergoing one of the biggest redevelopments in the park’s history.

DinoLand U.S.A. Has Closed

DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed on 2 February 2026. Its final attractions and facilities, including DINOSAUR, Restaurantosaurus and the Dino Institute Shop, are no longer available.

Other parts of DinoLand, including TriceraTop Spin, The Boneyard and the Fossil Fun Games, had already closed earlier.

The former land is now a major construction area, so older Animal Kingdom guides and maps that recommend DINOSAUR are out of date.

Tropical Americas Is Coming in 2027

DinoLand is being replaced by a new 11-acre area called Tropical Americas, with its central town known as Pueblo Esperanza.

The new land is planned to include:

  • A new Indiana Jones attraction

  • Disney’s first Encanto ride-through attraction

  • A large animal-themed carousel

  • A new children’s play area

  • One of Walt Disney World’s largest quick-service restaurants

  • A central fountain and tropical landscaping

Disney has confirmed that Tropical Americas will open during 2027, but an exact opening date has not yet been announced.

The new Encanto attraction will centre on Antonio’s ability to communicate with animals, while the Indiana Jones attraction will follow a different story from Disney’s existing Indiana Jones rides.

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! Is Open

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is now open inside the Tree of Life Theater.

This indoor 4D show follows Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde and other Zootopia residents during the city’s Zoogether Day celebrations.

It has no minimum height requirement and currently participates in Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Bluey’s Wild World Is Open

Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station opened on 26 May 2026 and is expected to remain beyond Disney’s summer promotion.

Families can play games, dance and take part in an interactive experience with Bluey and Bingo. Activities are inspired by the programme and include games such as Keepy Uppy and Magic Asparagus.

Bluey’s Wild World is reached by taking the Wildlife Express Train from Africa. Pushchairs can travel on the train but must be folded before boarding.

Families travelling in 2027 should also check our best time to visit Walt Disney World guide before choosing their holiday dates.

Main Areas of Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is divided into several themed areas surrounding Discovery Island and the Tree of Life.

Understanding the layout before arriving can reduce unnecessary walking, particularly during hot or humid weather.

The Oasis

The Oasis begins immediately after the park entrance.

Most visitors walk quickly through this area on their way to Pandora or Kilimanjaro Safaris, but its shaded paths contain animal habitats, waterfalls and tropical planting.

Possible animal sightings include birds, anteaters and babirusas, although the animals visible can change.

You do not need to spend valuable early-morning time here. Consider exploring The Oasis on your way out of the park when ride queues are no longer a priority.

Discovery Island

Discovery Island sits in the middle of Animal Kingdom and connects the park’s main areas.

Its centrepiece is the Tree of Life, which is 145 feet tall and contains carvings of more than 300 animals. Some of the best close-up views can be found along the Discovery Island Trails rather than directly in front of the tree.

Discovery Island currently includes:

  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

  • Discovery Island Trails

  • Mickey and Minnie at Adventurers Outpost

  • Moana at Character Landing

  • The Zoogether Day Gathering Spot

  • Tiffins Restaurant

  • Nomad Lounge

  • Flame Tree Barbecue

  • Pizzafari

The outdoor seating behind Flame Tree Barbecue is also one of the park’s most peaceful places to stop for lunch.

Pandora – The World of Avatar

Pandora is Animal Kingdom’s most visually impressive land and normally its busiest area.

The land contains floating mountains, waterfalls, unusual plants and two attractions based on the world of Avatar.

If queue times are important to your family, read our Disney Lightning Lane Multi Pass guide before booking your park days.

Avatar Flight of Passage

Avatar Flight of Passage is Animal Kingdom’s headline attraction.

Guests sit on individual bike-style ride vehicles and experience a simulated flight across Pandora. The attraction uses movement, a large screen, 3D imagery, wind, mist and other effects to create the sensation of riding a banshee.

The ride can feel intense despite not being a conventional roller coaster. Guests who experience motion sickness may find it uncomfortable.

Height requirement: 112cm

Best for: Older children, teenagers and adults

Lightning Lane: Single Pass

Queue priority: Very high

The best ways to reduce your wait are to use Early Theme Park Entry, purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass or join the standby queue close to park closing.

Na’vi River Journey

Na’vi River Journey is a slow indoor boat ride through a glowing Pandoran rainforest.

It has no minimum height requirement and is suitable for younger children. The attraction is visually impressive, although the actual ride is relatively short.

Height requirement: Any height

Best for: The whole family

Lightning Lane: Multi Pass

Queue priority: Medium to high

Waiting more than an hour may not represent good use of your day. Consider booking it through Multi Pass or riding near the beginning or end of the day.

Satu’li Canteen

Satu’li Canteen is one of the best quick-service restaurants at Walt Disney World.

Its build-your-own bowls allow guests to choose a base, protein and sauce. This makes it a useful option for families who want something more substantial than burgers and chips.

Mobile ordering can save time during busy lunch periods.

Africa

Africa is one of Animal Kingdom’s most detailed areas and contains several of the park’s most important experiences.

The main village, Harambe, includes aged buildings, colourful signs, live musicians and detailed shopfronts.

Major experiences include:

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris

  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

  • Festival of the Lion King

  • Wildlife Express Train

  • Tusker House Restaurant

  • Harambe Market

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris takes guests through a large wildlife reserve in an open-sided safari vehicle.

Animals may include giraffes, elephants, lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, zebras and antelope. Sightings vary because the animals move naturally around their habitats.

The safari vehicle can be bumpy, but there is no minimum height requirement.

Height requirement: Any height

Best for: The whole family

Lightning Lane: Multi Pass

Queue priority: High

The safari is often recommended during the morning when temperatures are cooler, but no particular time can guarantee better animal activity.

An evening safari can feel different and may suit guests who want to experience the attraction more than once.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is located near the exit from Kilimanjaro Safaris.

This self-guided trail includes gorillas, hippos, birds and other animals. Many visitors walk past it without realising how substantial it is.

Allow approximately 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how much time your family wants to spend watching the animals.

The trail may close earlier than the main park, so do not automatically leave it until the end of the day.

Festival of the Lion King

Festival of the Lion King is one of the best stage shows at Walt Disney World.

The 40-minute production combines singers, dancers, acrobatics, puppetry and familiar music from The Lion King.

It is indoors and provides a useful break from the heat or rain.

Arrive before the advertised performance time because the theatre can reach capacity during busy periods.

Conservation Station and Rafiki’s Planet Watch

Conservation Station is reached by taking the Wildlife Express Train from Africa.

There is no normal walking route between Conservation Station and the main park, so remember to include the return train journey in your plans.

Current experiences include:

  • Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station

  • Jumping Junction

  • Veterinary treatment viewing

  • Animal nutrition displays

  • Reptile, amphibian and invertebrate exhibits

  • Science and conservation displays

Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station

Bluey’s Wild World is likely to be a major priority for families with younger children.

The experience is interactive rather than a standard ride. Guests play games and dance with Bluey and Bingo before a bubble-filled finale.

Although there are opportunities to see and photograph the characters, you should not expect the same slow, private interaction provided at a conventional character meet-and-greet.

Operating times can finish well before the main park closes, so check the My Disney Experience app and visit earlier in the day.

Jumping Junction

Jumping Junction is a guided animal experience featuring kangaroos and wallabies in a shared habitat.

A Disney animal-care specialist provides information while guests walk through the area.

It can be combined with Bluey’s Wild World during the same trip to Conservation Station.

Is Conservation Station Worth the Time?

Conservation Station is worth visiting when:

  • Your children are Bluey fans

  • Your family is interested in animal care

  • You have younger children who need a break from ride queues

  • You want to see kangaroos and wallabies

  • You have already completed the main headline attractions

Families focused mainly on thrill rides may prefer to skip it because the train journeys and activities can take a substantial part of the day.

Families visiting with younger children may also find our Magic Kingdom guide for UK families useful, as Magic Kingdom has the widest selection of rides without height restrictions.

Asia

Asia is home to Animal Kingdom’s main roller coaster, water ride and one of its strongest animal trails.

Expedition Everest

Expedition Everest is a fast roller coaster through a fictional Himalayan mountain.

The attraction includes darkness, backward movement, substantial drops and an encounter with the Yeti.

It is more intense than Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and may be unsuitable for children who dislike darkness or unexpected movement.

Height requirement: 112cm

Best for: Thrill-seekers

Lightning Lane: Multi Pass

Queue priority: Medium to high

A Single Rider queue is often available, although families using it will normally be separated and may not ride in the same vehicle.

Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids is a circular raft ride with spinning, turbulent water and a large descent.

Some guests receive a small splash while others become completely soaked.

Height requirement: 97cm

Best for: Hot afternoons

Lightning Lane: Multi Pass

Queue priority: Medium

Protect phones, wallets and other valuables. Avoid riding in footwear or clothing that will become uncomfortable if soaked.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

Maharajah Jungle Trek is a self-guided animal trail set around detailed temple ruins.

Its main animals include tigers, birds and bats. Animal visibility varies, but the environment itself makes the trail worth exploring.

Like Gorilla Falls, the trail can close earlier than the main park.

Best Rides at Animal Kingdom Ranked

1. Avatar Flight of Passage

Flight of Passage is the park’s most technologically impressive attraction and normally its longest queue.

It should be the main priority for families with children who meet the 112cm height requirement and enjoy simulator-style rides.

2. Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is the attraction that best represents Animal Kingdom.

It is suitable for nearly every age group and provides a different experience each time because the animal activity changes.

3. Expedition Everest

Expedition Everest is one of Walt Disney World’s best roller coasters.

It offers a more intense experience than most Disney family rides without reaching the extreme level of some Universal Orlando coasters.

4. Na’vi River Journey

Na’vi River Journey is gentle, atmospheric and suitable for the whole family.

Its main weakness is that the queue can be disproportionately long compared with the length of the ride.

5. Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids is enjoyable during hot weather but should be planned carefully because of the likelihood of becoming wet.

6. Wildlife Express Train

The Wildlife Express Train is primarily transport to Conservation Station rather than a headline ride.

It is most worthwhile for families visiting Bluey’s Wild World, Jumping Junction or the animal-care exhibits.

Disney will measure children at the attraction entrance. A child who does not meet the minimum height will not be allowed to ride, even when wearing thicker footwear. Current official listings confirm the three restricted Animal Kingdom attractions at 112cm, 112cm and 97cm respectively.

Comparing ride restrictions across the Disney parks? See our Magic Kingdom ride guide, EPCOT guide and Hollywood Studios guide.

Rider Switch at Animal Kingdom

Rider Switch can help families when one child is too small or does not want to experience an attraction.

One group rides while another adult remains with the non-riding child. The waiting adult can then experience the attraction without joining the full standby queue again.

Ask a Cast Member at the attraction entrance before anyone enters the queue.

Rider Switch is particularly useful at:

  • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • Expedition Everest
  • Kali River Rapids

Disney currently allows a maximum of two guests in the returning Rider Switch group.

Best Shows at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom’s live shows are not simply filler between rides. They are some of the park’s best attractions and should be included in a full-day itinerary.

Festival of the Lion King

Festival of the Lion King is the park’s strongest all-round stage show.

It lasts approximately 40 minutes and features music, acrobatics, dancing and large character puppets.

It is suitable for most age groups and offers an air-conditioned break.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! uses puppetry, music and large digital scenery to tell a story featuring Nemo, Dory and Marlin.

The indoor show lasts approximately 25 minutes and is particularly suitable for younger children.

Feathered Friends in Flight!

Feathered Friends in Flight! is an outdoor bird presentation showing the natural abilities and behaviours of different species.

Because the theatre is outdoors, performances can be affected by storms, wind or other unsuitable weather.

Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is a 4D show inside the Tree of Life.

It has no minimum height and provides an indoor break without taking as much time as the park’s larger stage productions.

Tree of Life Awakenings

Tree of Life Awakenings uses projections to bring the Tree of Life carvings to life after dark.

Animal Kingdom does not always remain open late enough for the experience to operate, particularly during periods when sunset occurs after park closing.

Treat it as a possible evening bonus rather than a guaranteed end-of-day show.

Animal Kingdom Characters

Character locations and appearance times can change, so check the app on the morning of your visit.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse

Mickey and Minnie currently meet together inside Adventurers Outpost on Discovery Island.

The indoor location makes this a useful option during hot or wet weather.

Moana

Moana currently meets guests at Character Landing on Discovery Island.

Her appearances can finish several hours before park closing, so check the schedule early.

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde

Judy and Nick can be found at the Zoogether Day Gathering Spot near the Tree of Life.

This experience complements the nearby Zootopia: Better Zoogether! show.

Bluey and Bingo

Bluey and Bingo appear as part of Bluey’s Wild World at Conservation Station.

This is an interactive group experience involving games and dancing rather than a standard character queue.

Kevin

Kevin from Up can make roaming appearances around Discovery Island.

Because Kevin moves around the area, there may not be a fixed queue or guaranteed appearance at a particular moment.

Current official listings include Mickey and friends at Adventurers Outpost, Moana at Character Landing and Zootopia characters at the Zoogether Day Gathering Spot.

Lightning Lane at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom currently uses Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass and Premier Pass.

Prices vary according to date and demand.

Lightning Lane Single Pass

Avatar Flight of Passage is currently Animal Kingdom’s Single Pass attraction.

It is not included with Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Buying the Single Pass may be worthwhile when:

  • Flight of Passage is essential for your family

  • You are staying outside Disney and cannot use Early Entry

  • You are visiting during a busy holiday period

  • You do not want to begin the day in a long Pandora queue

  • Someone in your family struggles with extended standby waits

Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Current Multi Pass attractions at Animal Kingdom include:

  • Expedition Everest

  • Feathered Friends in Flight!

  • Festival of the Lion King

  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!

  • Kali River Rapids

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris

  • Na’vi River Journey

  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

Animal Kingdom does not currently divide its advance Multi Pass selections into separate attraction tiers. Guests can initially choose up to three available experiences.

After using the first selection, another can be booked through the My Disney Experience app, subject to availability.

Best Animal Kingdom Multi Pass Choices

The strongest advance selections will usually be:

  1. Na’vi River Journey

  2. Kilimanjaro Safaris

  3. Expedition Everest

Kali River Rapids can also be useful during hot, busy days.

We would not normally use an early advance selection on a stage show unless showtimes are particularly important to your itinerary.

When Can UK Visitors Book Lightning Lane?

Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and certain selected hotels can purchase Lightning Lane passes up to seven days before the start of their stay.

Most other eligible guests can purchase passes up to three days before their park visit or ticket start date.

Purchases and advance selections open at 7am Eastern Time on the first eligible booking day.

Is Multi Pass Worth Buying at Animal Kingdom?

Multi Pass is less essential at Animal Kingdom than at Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios because there are fewer major rides.

It may still provide value when:

  • You are visiting during a school holiday

  • You arrive after park opening

  • You want to ride Na’vi River Journey without a long wait

  • You want a more relaxed itinerary

  • Your family cannot cope with lengthy standby queues

Families arriving before opening can often complete several major attractions without purchasing Multi Pass.

Best Animal Kingdom Restaurants

Animal Kingdom has some of the strongest and most varied theme park food at Walt Disney World.

Satu’li Canteen

Location: Pandora

Type: Quick service

Best for: Customisable bowls and families wanting something different

Satu’li Canteen offers build-your-own bowls with different bases, proteins and sauces.

The menu is more flexible than a typical theme park burger restaurant and works well for mixed family preferences.

Flame Tree Barbecue

Location: Discovery Island

Type: Quick service

Best for: Barbecue food and outdoor seating

Flame Tree Barbecue serves ribs, chicken and other barbecue-style meals.

Its large seating area behind the restaurant overlooks the water and is much quieter than the main path.

Harambe Market

Location: Africa

Type: Quick service

Best for: Informal meals and African-inspired flavours

Harambe Market offers several choices in a themed outdoor setting.

Some seating is exposed to heat or rain, so check the weather before settling down for a long break.

Yak & Yeti Restaurant

Location: Asia

Type: Table service

Best for: Families wanting a substantial sit-down meal

Yak & Yeti serves a broad Asian-inspired menu in an indoor restaurant.

Advance reservations are advisable during busy periods.

Tusker House Restaurant

Location: Africa

Type: Character buffet

Best for: Character dining

Tusker House offers African-inspired and familiar American dishes alongside appearances from Donald Duck and Disney friends.

It is one of the most convenient character dining experiences for families already spending a full day at Animal Kingdom.

Tiffins Restaurant

Location: Discovery Island

Type: Signature table service

Best for: Adults, special occasions and adventurous diners

Tiffins offers African, Asian and Latin-inspired dishes in a quieter setting.

It is considerably more expensive than the park’s quick-service options and can take a substantial part of the day.

Nomad Lounge

Nomad Lounge is connected to Tiffins and offers drinks, small plates and a more relaxed atmosphere.

It can be a good afternoon stop for adults but may involve a wait because it is popular and relatively small.

The current official Animal Kingdom dining list includes Satu’li Canteen, Flame Tree Barbecue, Harambe Market, Tiffins, Tusker House and both Yak & Yeti locations.

Staying near Walt Disney World can make early park entry easier. Compare areas and hotels in our Walt Disney World accommodation guide.

One-Day Animal Kingdom Itinerary

This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to experience the main rides, animals and shows without crossing the park unnecessarily.

Exact showtimes and Lightning Lane availability will affect the order.

Before Park Opening

Arrive approximately 30 to 45 minutes before the advertised opening time.

Have your tickets linked to My Disney Experience and decide whether Flight of Passage or Kilimanjaro Safaris is your first priority.

Disney Resort guests using Early Entry should normally start in Pandora.

Early Morning

Ride Avatar Flight of Passage first.

After Flight of Passage, ride Na’vi River Journey if the queue remains reasonable or you have a suitable Lightning Lane return time.

Leave Pandora and walk towards Africa.

Mid-Morning

Ride Kilimanjaro Safaris before the main queue reaches its midday peak.

After the safari, explore Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

Check the next Festival of the Lion King performance and join the queue early enough to secure a seat.

Lunchtime

Eat at Satu’li Canteen, Flame Tree Barbecue or Harambe Market.

Use mobile ordering where available to avoid joining the food queue at the busiest time.

Early Afternoon

Take the Wildlife Express Train to Conservation Station.

Visit Bluey’s Wild World and Jumping Junction, then explore the animal-care exhibits before returning to Africa.

Families who are not interested in Bluey or Conservation Station can use this time for Maharajah Jungle Trek or a second stage show.

Mid-Afternoon

Walk towards Asia and ride Expedition Everest.

Ride Kali River Rapids if the weather is warm and you do not mind becoming wet.

Explore Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Late Afternoon

Watch Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! or Feathered Friends in Flight!, depending on the available performance times.

Return to Discovery Island for Zootopia: Better Zoogether! and any character experiences you have not completed.

End of the Day

Return to Pandora for photographs and a possible second ride.

Pandora becomes particularly atmospheric as the light begins to fade.

When the park remains open after dark, check whether Tree of Life Awakenings is operating before leaving.

Building a complete holiday schedule? See our Orlando 14-day itinerary for UK families for a realistic Disney, Universal and rest-day plan.

Animal Kingdom Itinerary for Families With Young Children

Families with toddlers or younger children should not try to follow a thrill-ride-focused touring plan.

A more suitable order would be:

  1. Kilimanjaro Safaris
  2. Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail
  3. Festival of the Lion King
  4. Wildlife Express Train
  5. Bluey’s Wild World
  6. Jumping Junction
  7. Lunch and rest
  8. Na’vi River Journey
  9. Finding Nemo
  10. Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
  11. Characters on Discovery Island

Parents who want to experience Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest or Kali River Rapids can use Rider Switch.

Build in more breaks than you think you will need. Animal Kingdom is large, humid and contains more outdoor walking than many visitors expect.

Animal Kingdom Itinerary Without Lightning Lane

You can still have a successful day without purchasing Lightning Lane.

The most important factor is arriving before park opening.

Start with Flight of Passage, then complete Na’vi River Journey before travelling to Africa for Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Leave Expedition Everest until later in the morning or use the Single Rider queue.

Use the middle of the day for animal trails, Conservation Station and stage shows rather than waiting in the longest queues.

Check Flight of Passage near park closing because its displayed wait can sometimes become more manageable.

Best Animal Kingdom Tips for UK Families

Arrive Earlier Than You Think

Animal Kingdom often opens early, and the first hour can be much more productive than the middle of the day.

Arriving at the advertised opening time may mean joining behind thousands of other visitors.

Do Not Ignore the Animal Trails

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and Maharajah Jungle Trek are major parts of the park rather than minor paths.

Skipping them makes Animal Kingdom feel much smaller than it really is.

Check Closing Times for Individual Experiences

Conservation Station, the Wildlife Express Train, animal trails and character meetings may finish before the main park closes.

Check the app early rather than assuming everything operates until closing.

Prepare for Heat and Humidity

Animal Kingdom can feel particularly hot because many experiences are outdoors and walking routes can be exposed.

Carry water, use sun cream and plan indoor shows during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Expect Afternoon Storms

Florida thunderstorms can temporarily close outdoor attractions, including Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids and some animal experiences.

Complete important outdoor rides earlier when storms are forecast.

Protect Your Belongings on Kali River Rapids

Place electronics and valuables somewhere waterproof.

Be prepared for one member of your family to become much wetter than everyone else.

Do Not Rush Through Pandora

Pandora contains more than its two rides.

Allow time to explore the pathways, floating mountains and unusual plants, especially later in the day.

Use Mobile Ordering

Mobile ordering can reduce the time spent waiting at participating quick-service restaurants.

Choose a return window before your family becomes hungry because popular times can become unavailable.

Take Photographs Away From the Main Tree of Life View

The busiest photograph location is directly in front of the Tree of Life.

Discovery Island Trails and the Flame Tree Barbecue seating area provide quieter angles.

Check Your Children’s Heights Before Travelling

Animal Kingdom only has three rides with minimum height restrictions, but two of its biggest attractions require children to be at least 112cm.

Measure children without shoes before building the day around Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest.

Is Animal Kingdom a Half-Day Park?

Animal Kingdom can be a half-day park for repeat visitors who only want to experience Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest.

It is not normally a half-day park for first-time visitors.

A full visit can include:

  • Five main rides
  • Multiple animal trails
  • Three major live shows
  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
  • Bluey’s Wild World
  • Jumping Junction
  • Conservation Station
  • Character meetings
  • Live entertainment
  • Evening views of Pandora

Families who arrive late and ignore the non-ride experiences may finish early, but they will have missed much of what makes Animal Kingdom different.

How to Get to Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is not connected to the Disney Skyliner, monorail or boat network.

Visitors normally arrive by:

  • Disney bus
  • Hotel shuttle
  • Hire car
  • Taxi
  • Ride-share service

Disney buses serve Animal Kingdom from Disney Resort hotels and other Disney destinations.

Families driving should allow time for parking, walking or tram transport and security checks.

Unsure whether to drive? Our guide to whether UK families need a car in Orlando compares hire cars, Disney transport, taxis and ride-share services.

What Should You Take to Animal Kingdom?

Useful items include:

  • Refillable water bottles
  • Sun cream
  • Hats
  • Lightweight rain ponchos
  • Portable phone charger
  • Comfortable footwear
  • A waterproof phone pouch
  • Spare clothes for younger children
  • Insect repellent for sensitive visitors

Avoid carrying an unnecessarily heavy bag because Animal Kingdom involves a significant amount of walking.

For a broader packing and preparation checklist, read our Orlando planning guide for UK families.

Final Verdict

Disney’s Animal Kingdom deserves a place in most first-time Walt Disney World itineraries.

It has fewer traditional rides than Magic Kingdom, but the overall experience is more varied. Avatar Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest provide thrills, while Kilimanjaro Safaris, animal trails and Conservation Station make the park suitable for families who want more than rides.

The 2026 closure of DinoLand means the park currently has fewer major attractions than it will after Tropical Americas opens in 2027. However, Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, Bluey’s Wild World and Jumping Junction provide new experiences for families visiting now.

Arrive early, include at least one animal trail and avoid treating every non-ride experience as optional. That is the best way to understand why Animal Kingdom is different from every other Walt Disney World park.

Yes, when your ticket includes Park Hopper access. However, first-time visitors may find that leaving Animal Kingdom early means missing its trails, shows and Conservation Station.
